Communication has changed tremendously over the past several years. It’s become fragmented by dividing our attention between people in the room and those on your device. Our quality of exchanges decreases as we deny each other our attention. Lead better — boss technology.
Your productivity is killed when you respond to emails as they arrive. It can take up to 20 minutes to re-focus. This is happening because workers feel overwhelmed with all the demands placed on them. They want to stay isolated behind technology thinking they’ll be more productive. Wrong. We feel pulled in too many directions creating emptiness and frustration. What can leaders do about this?
Leaders can encourage having real conversations. Yahoo did this by radically changing the telecommute policy. Workers at these companies are more productive and happier. They learn valuable information through spontaneous conversations and it builds a feeling of community.
Leaders at large and small companies believe that personal conversations are necessary to establish trust, for sincere apologies and to close deals. Some organizations even turn off their servers at night and on weekends. Chances are you aren’t at one, but you can still boss technology. Be a change agent with these tips.

Boss your devices. Establish increments of time throughout your day to read and respond to emails. Use a countdown timer set to 3 minutes for each response. Email and texting are great! For certain situations. Having a real conversation can be even better. Be in the moment and really engage when someone is talking to you.
Boss yourself. Find balance with technology. Set parameters of when you use your devices and when you don’t. Challenge yourself to not bring your smart phone to the dinner table. Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, makes himself digitally inaccessible on weekends.
Boss your team. Coach your team to digitally detox for periods of time so they can focus on their work and notice how productivity improves! Coach them on using email and when to have face time. Be radical and establish meeting ground rules so real conversations happen without technology interruptions.
